Is using ISO-8583 protocol instead of protocols such NDC and DDC for ATM applicable? I have heard that ISO-8583 is used mostly to make connection between Switch and Host and it is not so common in an ATM. Does it have a technical reason? Has ISO-8583 been defined only in Financial Transactions? For monitoring, it is necessary also to send messages other than Financial. Dose ISO-8583 support these messages, too? Is there ready application that one can install it on an ATM or should we, ourselves, develop an ISO-8583 client? May an ATM that an ISO-8583 based client installed on it act as a POS? I mean that like POS just sends transaction to host and receive response and, scenarios and screens have been saved on the ATM previously? May, in ISO-8583, just as NDC protocol, send download and change screens? I want to know how much it will be different if an ATM wants to connect to switch through ISO-8583 or with protocol such as NDC.

Some banks really use ISO-8583 on ATMs (I've seen some personally, also participated in app development).
But since it's just financial protocol, all extra information such as hardware monitoring, client side script etc should be implemented at the application side (this practically means project-specific application development).
There is no standard defining such things for ISO-8583, so there should really be a reason for a bank to start using ISO-8583 on ATM.
There is no such thing as ready-made ISO-8583 app for ATM (all existing apps are just a platforms for further customization).
A typical ISO-8583-based app on ATM communicates with a custom server using a custom protocol, ISO-8583 being used just for transactions.
Typical NDC/DDC switch just converts ndc/ddc transaction requests to ISO...
